Ah yes!! Now I see why Ryan Coonerty banned Bernard Klitzner and myself permanently from Bookshop Santa Cruz!! Ryan is against public assembly, picketing, freedom of speech, the right to redress government grievances, seeking signatures on petitions, and against allowing homeless people to sleep at night.

As these photos show, obviously these activities interfere with the ability of Bookshop Santa Cruz to practice freedom of the press!! They CERTAINLY inspire criminal types to go cut the straps off of a baby-changing table in the bathroom. Isn't it obvious?

QUESTION: Can a part-time cashier permanently ban someone from that business? Doesn't someone who is at least holding a manager's position have to do it?

Philadelphia: Summer Homeless Population Highest in Ten Years
http://www.phillyimc.org/or/2007/10/42620.shtml

A recent census taken by the City's homeless outreach teams found over six hundred people sleeping on the street. This is the highest total since 1997 and almost double the count from four years ago.

The following notes may give a little more detail about Bob Patton's photos:

CAPTIONS FOR PICTURES

1: from right to left, musician Valerie Promise, unidentified woman (face obscured), Robert Norse, unknown woman, “Swami”, UCSC student Harmony (with signboard), musician Valerie Christy, Valerie C. and Swami are affixing the “Boycott Bigotry: Ask Before You Shop” sandwich board on Harmony (part of a picket and leafleting going on in front of the Bookshop.

2: the Mock Cop is Rico Thunder doing a Know Your Rights role-playing demonstration. The guitarist is Merryweather Mike.

3: musician Valerie Christy, who feeds, plays, and tables in front of New Leaf on Tuesday nights taking back public spaces with HUFF (Homeless United for Friendship & Freedom) and SAFE (Streetperformers Against Foolish Enforcement).

4: Mock cops Jason and Rico and Swami teaching watchers the first question to ask police is “Am I free to go?”

5: Statute of anarchist/communist acrivist Tom Scribner (who also played the musical saw)--kidnapped from Scribner park across from the Town Clock (that park is now being dismantled and sold to adjacent businesses. Standing nearby are Rico and Valerie C.

6: The man in the straw hat is Craig Canada, famous homeless medical marijuana activist (see “Contaminated Courts? The Strange Case of Craig Canada, Homeless Medical Marijuana Patient
http://www.indybay.org /newsitems/2007/10/01/18450882.php

7: Harmony urges a potential customer to give a written note to Vice-Mayor and Bookshop worker Ryan Coonerty urging him to explain his bizarre pro-Sleeping Ban position so that she can understand why homeless people only need to sleep during the day and she can continue to support a store which supports this position.

8: Rico confronts Jason, the former playing a cop, the latter playing a suspect, perhaps saying the magic words: “I do not consent to a search; I have nothing to say; I would like to speak to an attorney.”

9: Folks gather to watch the continuing “Know Your Rights” workshop, from which blogger and former Metro Santa Cruz Columnist Bruce Bratton has disassociated himself [“BOYCOTTING WES MODES & GRANT WILSON http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2007/10/01/18450695.php?show_comments=1#18450837]

10: Norse confronted by Officer Jason with an unidentified man looking on.

11: Rico in plain clothes reads from a clipboard while his workshop is videoed by parties unknown.

12: The picketing and the videoing continues!

Becky Johnson's photo has Bernard Klitzner (yellow shirt) meeting Ryan Coonerty face-to-face as Ryan ducks into the Bookshop rather than discuss the issues.
